Winchester, UK - The UK Ministry of Defence has awarded Saft two contracts worth £2.75 million in total to supply lithium-sulphur dioxide (Li-SO2) batteries.
Both contracts will support the UK military's current operational requirements for portable radios used in the field.
Delivery of Saft's BA-5590 B/U and G30-102B batteries commenced last month.
"Due to urgent requirements from the field, rapid delivery of the batteries was one of the most important factors in winning these contracts," said Thomas Alcide, General Manager of Saft's Specialty Battery Group. "Multiple orders from the UK Ministry of Defence re-affirm Saft's position as the leading supplier of advanced battery power for military applications worldwide."
Saft's South Shields facility is fulfilling the G30-102B series order and provides portable power in Li-SO2 and Li-SOCl2 technologies. The BA-5590 batteries are manufactured in Saft's Valdese, N.C. facility in the USA that supplies multiple lithium battery technologies, including Li-SO2, Li-MnO2 and Liion.
Earlier this month Saft was awarded a major multi-year contract by the U.S. Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) to supply the US Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps with BA5590 lithium sulphur dioxide (Li-SO2) batteries from the Valdese production facility.
